Bioverde Farm

Bioverde Farm

Salvatore, Marinella and Santo

When we talk about wisdom of ancient agricultural traditions, we refer to the knowledge that, in the past, has characerized the work of many farmers. And this is exactly the case of Salvatore and his farm, located in the beautiful southern region of Sicily.

His father Pietro started to work in the fields in the '60s, when the organic certification had not yet established. Pietro wanted to learn everything and always developed himself in order to be able to respect his lands and secure a genuine harvest. He thus managed to become a forerunner and brought a lot of innovation to his farm which was converted into an organic one in 1993, when only few people relied on these farming practices.

Mastery and know-how are handed down from father to son, and today, Salvatore, Marinella and Santo are still keeping up Pietro's work. They have expanded and diversified the farm by implementing new tools, devoting their time to discovering new innovations, always in full respect of agro-biodiversity. Vegetables, Citrus Fruit, Seasonal Fruit and Avocados: each product is the result of grounding and tradition. On the one hand, they rely on the most authentic and traditional agricultural practices while on the other hand, they incorporate innovative tools and methods, managing to give the best from their cultivated lands.

When asking Salvatore what he thinks about the progresses made so far, he answers us as follows: "the work of the farmer is a versatile one, you always have the opportunity to learn and discover many things. Unofortunately, in nowadays world, where foreign competition is stronger than before, our work encounters many difficulties and problems. Foreign competition strongly depreciated italian products, not to mention the fact that our country is currently facing resource depletion and an inevitable decline of raw materials. On top of this, there is also climate change, that is negatively impacting our job: for instance, in November 2021 there was such a heavy rainfall that could be compared to the rainfall of an entire year. This event lead to a loss of jobs, fruits and vegetables"

We already know how to act to save our territory, we just have to decide to follow the same path.

Our lands

The Bioverde farm is located at the extreme south-eastern point of Sicily, where it aims at developing both the production and the marketing of typical and local fruit and vegetables by means of organic farming practices. All the products that are grown in the Bioverde farm come from an ecosystem which is in full balance with nature, as no synthetic chemical inputs are used. The agricultural products grow and ripen using merely compounds of natural origin and through sustainable agronomic techniques: green manure, crop rotation, intercropping and biological pest control with beneficial organisms and their products, in order to protect the crops from harmful biotic and abiotic agents. Bioverde farm extends for about 100Ha, all converted in A.B and cultivated by specialized workers such as agronomists and agrotechnicians. The products' health in ensured and controlled throughout the whole supply chain by Bioagricert, a certifying authority which also constantly monitors the entire crops' cycle during all the production stages.
