Briatico Welfare Farm
Gregorio's story is simple, natural and authentic. It is a story made of interwining, traditions and innovations.
He comes from a family in which the passion for land and for agriculture is spread and intense. Gregorio tells us that he is the "son of this art": in fact, his parents and before them his grandparents were passionate farmers. Gregorio inherited and cultivated this passion, giving life to new lands and new agricultural practices based on legality, trasparency and ethics.
Today, he takes care of the farm together with his whole family, his wife and children who help him everyday in the peculiar cultivation of Onions and Shallots. Indeed, growing these crops is not simple and it requires extreme attention and a lot of labor force. Everything is manually done, from the planting to the harvesting. The reason lies in the uniqueness of the cultivated land that doesn't allow the use of mechanical harvesters.
In addition to agricultural production, Gregorio is also involved in rural development projects, trying to show the insuperable treasures and the beauty of his region, Calabria. In 2011, he founded his farm "Briatico Welfare" to also redeem the harsh territories of Calabria and to pave the way for a sustainable social development. Since 2014, the company has been organically certified: Gregorio tells us that it has been a natural evolution, something that gave more value and quality to the products that he grows.
When we ask Gregorio what organic agriculture means for him, he answers in the following way: "organic farming was born to protect the work of every farmer, to safeguard rural life and the products that nature gives us, which are the basis for every system".
And we firmly believe that our origins, like the roots of the trees, are strongly linked to Earth. Only by taking care of it, we can generate better fruits.
Our lands
The "Briatico Welfare" farm is the first one that started to grow Organic Red Onions of Tropea PGI. There, they also grow other varieties of vegetables, such as shallots, peppers, eggplants and some more. The farmlands are located in the region of Calabria, in Briatico, where the cultivation of these onions is very suitable thanks to the mild climate and the proximity to the seaside. The production and processing of these vegetables is very peculiar and completely manual. The land in which they are grown doesn't allow the use of mechanical harvesters. Therefore, a lot of labor force is required and this is followed by a slow and patient harvesting process which makes the cultivation of shallots very long and tiring. Each root is in fact planted and striclty followed during the whole growing stages; the vegetables then ripen under constant care and attention and the result are authentic products that exalt and enhance this land and its resources.
